This mountain is the only volcanic mountain active in East Africa, furthermore it is the only volcanic mountain in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava rich in rare sodium and potassium carbonate minerals that cause the temperature of it's erupting lava to have relatively low temperature to a point that its molten lava would appear black in daylight unlike the common lava that would appear red, Having producing a cool lava is unusual among the rest of volcano produced around the world.
The maasai people would go to this mountain to make prayers to the gods, they believe their prayers are answered from this mountain.

Near the mountain there is a shallow soda Lake called Natron that has very high concentration of salt and some minerals.
During dry season as the lake water evaporates salinity levels go higher, at this point the salt loving micro-organisms begin to flourish in the beds of the lake.
Some of the salt loving micro-organisms include cyanobacteria that undertake photosynthesis, through the process red photosynthesizing pigment in the cyanobacteria develop redness in open water living the lake seeming to be red. You would want to see this, so after you are done with oldoinyo lengai visit the lake.
